How customers can identify the recalled product: This recall involves Zipadee Montessori beds sold in twin, full, and queen-size variations of the “Convertible House Bed Frame” and “Montessori Floor Bed.” Customers can contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in order to verify if their Zipadee Montessori bed is associated with the recall.
Parents and guardians all across the United States who have purchased Zipadee Kids Convertible House Bed Frames and Montessori Floor Beds are urged to dispose of the beds after reports released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) claim the beds can lead to entrapment and strangulation hazards. On August 17th, 2023, the CPSC released a recall notice for all Zipadee Kids customers after reports of two children suffering injuries after becoming entrapped in the bed rails.
The issue begins with the overall design of the bed frame and floor bed, as noted on the CPSC recall. The report states that spindles used on the beds are spaced at a distance which creates a serious entrapment hazard. More specifically, the beds allow the child's torso to slip through the rail opening, however, it does not allow their head to pass, which can cause entrapment and strangulation and possibly lead to death. To date, there have been no other reported events, and the two children involved in the initial reports, including a 21-month-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, only sustained minor injuries as a result of the bed design.
The recall involves the Zipadee Montessori beds sold in twin, full, and queen-size variations of the "Convertible House Bed Frame" and "Montessori Floor Bed," which were shipped out between February 26th, 2018, and October 22nd, 2021. The company also sold "toddler-sized" Montessori beds, which were manufactured between May and September 2018. As described by Zipadee, the beds are intended for children 18 months and older, are made from all-natural wood, and were designed to be raised or converted to adjust for a child's sleeping needs as they grow and develop.
The Zipadee Montessori beds were sold online from February 2018 through September 2021 at Zipadeekids.com and on Zipadee's Etsy.com shop for between $260 and $900. The recall currently affects roughly 7,450 units across the United States. Unfortunately, for those customers who have purchased one of the beds, recovering monetary compensation from Bell Station Interiors may be impossible as the CPSC noted that the children's furniture company has filed for dissolution with the State of Ohio and has represented to CPSC that it is unable to offer a remedy to consumers.
