On August 16th, 2023, Gree Electric Appliances Inc. (Gree) issued a recall of roughly 1.56 million dehumidifiers. Gree is a Chinese home appliances manufacturer headquartered in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, and is the world's largest residential air-conditioner manufacturer whose units are sold in the United States under various brand names. The recall comes after the company received notice of nearly two dozen incidents of the units catching fire, hundreds of incidents of overheating, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage.

According to the recall report posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to date, the dehumidifiers are responsible for the start of 23 fires. In addition, there have been 688 incidents of the defective units overheating, and they have caused roughly $168,000 in property damage. The recalled units were sold in retailers nationwide, like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sam’s Club, Sears, and Walmart, from the beginning of 2011 through 2014. Consumers who find they own one of the recalled units should immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact Gree for the next steps.
